About the Author Workshop

The authors name in a style that their work evokes, I made it spooky looking with ink splatters for that ye olde ink writing look.

A gestural mark - also reflecting the authors work. I used a brush pen to give the texture, I thought it looks kind of like smoke or mist - relating to the dark atmosphere of Poe's work.

A visual representation of a motif in the authors work. I kind of merged death (of a young, beautiful woman) and sickness together. Death shown by the skull, with some feminine features added, and illness shown through the dripping red - I scratched the red down the mouth and neck of the figure because of Poe's personal experiences with tuberculosis.

We were told to try doing a similar thing but in an opposite way - so the colour scheme was sort of contrasting with the motif. Skulls look spooky in any colour, but I really enjoyed doing this as it got me thinking about how I can break away from cliches (though in all honesty I kind of love the cliche horror look, for I am a big ol' goth cliche). Anyway, the pink skull looks really soft - I like this aesthetic - what if Poe's work was illustrated with the same imagery but in soft pastel colours?
I also like the greens and yellows but at the same time they still kind of look like sick or rotten flesh colours, maybe bright orange would have been better.

Ben said that I might want to approach this by not making really gory work, to make it different to what's already been done in relation to Poe's work. I will definitely consider this, but a bit of gore might be nice too.

We did some monstrous exquisite corpses too.
