Final Images
Feedback:
- Good use of complimentary colours
- Strong composition
- The simplicity of the designs are aesthetically pleasing and intriguing
- Exploration of media & dry brush approach is good
- Consider different background colours
- Find ways of getting a cleaner finish (photoshop, longer time spent on crafting etc)
- Some compositions are chaotic
- Ideas could have been refined to communicate better
- Idea is misleading - all images look like they are about different things
Evaluation:
This project was pretty challenging as I have never worked with editorial illustration before, The article I was working with had some abstract themes as it was based around self control, initially I found it difficult but I really started to enjoy being able to interpret the text. To make it easier for myself to make images from I identified main themes which I saw to be; resisting temptation, decision making, and achieving goals. In hindsight this may have not been a good idea, as it was said in feedback that the images all seemed about different things rather than being about self control as a whole. Despite this I do think the images still reflect the themes of the article and if they were seen together they wouldn't look out of place. Other people with the same article seemed to include some aspect of the original test with the marshmallow, but in my mind this was not something that needed illustrating and decided to go with more abstract ways of showing temptation.
The most pleasing thing about these images for me is the colour scheme, purple and yellow were the first colours I put down in the sketches and they stuck as they show a contrast of dark and light (good and evil, temptation and not temptation) without being black and white or red to show evil. Using complimentary colours makes all elements of the image stand out against each other and makes the images easy on the eye - unlike clashing colours. Also as pointed out by Molly the colours are the same colours as on a caramel Dairy Milk bar wrapper - a subliminal link to temptation.
A piece of feedback I got is that in the landscape image 'elements are floating around and look a bit lost', and I can somewhat understand what they mean but honestly I think the landscape one is one of the clearest images. Maybe the hands reaching out are a little hard to see so it looks like elements are floating but even the floating objects would have been an adequate representation of temptation. The landscape image is the one that responds most to the article, and although the ideas of the other two (being in two minds and having trouble making decisions) relate to the article I definitely think there could be a more solid connection to the text rather than just a suggestion - to make the images read clearer.
Although I like how the images have turned out I would have liked to have experimented using a different colour stock than white - I think it could have added more depth and more possibilities into the image. The dry brush is very effective, especially with the gouache ; it makes a great texture.
