Strengths
- Images work well as a set - I hadn't intended this to begin with but when I realised that the pure image and the text and image were similar in tone it made sense that the text should also fit into the theme. The colour schemes and atmosphere are consistent across the images.
- 'Top Notch Lighting' & 'Red is Bold and stands out, lovely lighting' - Since the word was 'light' the lighting of the images were essential. I feel like the orange highlights and red do really pop from the images and add to the atmosphere.
- World building - I have a few comments about the fact these images look like they exist in the same world, I love how it turned out that way as it creates a narrative within the pieces as if it could be a story.
Weaknesses
- CRUMPLED PAPER - I actually wrote this on my own crit sheet because it annoyed me so much! I had tried to tackle the problem as I had found reinforcing the paper with card before painting it had reduced the crumpling but it didn't work that way on the final images. I really needed to use a thicker watercolour paper but I sacrificed that for wanting to use a coloured stock.
- The city scene is unclear that it represents light - The motel sign should have been bigger and more of a feature on the page - it's just too subtle and blends into the piece. This would have made the image do without all this excess scenery as well as there wouldn't have been so much negative space to fill.
- Type in text and Image - I wanted it to look like a handwritten style type but left it really late to develop it or I would have made it look a lot better - I need to work on my time management.
I am in two minds about the cityscape. Personally I like the simplicity of the white lines creating a city but if the 'Motel' sign had been bigger and taken up more of the page it wouldn't need to be there - it's not essential and just there to fill space. Also the taxi is far too bright.
Overall I am pleased with these images, the atmosphere they convey and how they work together as a set. However I am aware that the crafting of every image could be miles better, streaky brush strokes, uneven lines etc all need to be improved.
