Artists and Inspiration
I was wondering how I could translate cities from Middle Earth into postcards, especially with vectors so I looked for some artists that had done similar things. I found these pieces above by Nicholas Hyde, which illustrate cities from Game of Thrones, while also using a vector like approach. I really like how the architecture has been simplified into shapes and minimal detail has been used - cutting out the windows - but it still successfully reflects the place. Though these pieces do have the advantage of text to make it clear where it is even if the viewer didn't know - I will have to find a different way of making this clear in my work.
The images seem to have running colour schemes on the building, and just changing the background colour. This and the moon in each image help to tie them together as a series. The addition of texture adds a bit more 'character' to these images too, I really like how these look!
I also found these Lord of the Rings and Hobbit posters by Matt Ferguson which illustrate lots of different elements of the whole stories rather than a place but I still thought they were pretty interesting, especially the layout - having the scenery around a ring or a hexagon. Again the artist has reduced the places to just shape - the images are just black shadows. In the images there are clear cues to show what's being communicated - the writing on the one ring, Sauron's tower, The Shire etc.
