Vis Com: Greetings from: Ideas and Development

I decided to investigate the idea of the focal point of each image being a circle in the middle of the page - The easiest image to design this for was the shire as the door would be a perfect circle.

I wondered how I could depict Minas Tirith as a circle and found this image online - which is a birdseye map of Minas Tirith used for role play games. I thought this was pretty cool and was totally useful on giving me a reference for the building from above.

a Hobbit door, a birdseye view of Minas Tirith, The One Ring and Barad-Dur (another birdseye view)  - Though I am unsure how this would truly work from above, would makeup the circular set. Although they are all very different and I'm not sure there would be a good sense of unity running through the set because of this.

I started to look into the theme of doorways of Middle Earth - starting with the Shire and Minas Morgul. I also looked at the doorway leading to Moria but thought that anything with something so decorative infront of it would just look too busy.

This led me to the idea of showing all the different cities through a circular hobbit door in the middle of the page - as then there would be a continuity through the four postcards. I also think it would be an interesting composition as the circle would frame the cities but also look as if you're looking through the door - sort of transporting the viewer to the place in a way.

Initially I had wanted to display the door, so it was clear that the viewer is looking out from the doorway into the world - rather than it just being a frame. However my friends gave some feedback that the door made the image look uneven and too heavy on that one side and just displaying the circular door-frame instead.

I really like this layout because it adds a new compositional element to the image - drawing the viewers focus through the circular frame and into the world of middle earth - and there are still so many options of how I can display the cities within the frame. I find that landscapes would be best as they're pretty epic and could really draw the viewer into the world.
